Mallorca in summer is a study in contrast: pine-shaded coves at 10am, glassy water at noon, marble terraces at midnight. A week's wardrobe needs to handle all three without becoming a second suitcase. Here's what we've learned from packing it ourselves.
The swim — three is the right number
Two suits worn alternately outlast three suits worn occasionally, but for a week of swimming twice a day you need a third in rotation. We'd pick:
- One structured one-piece in black or deep navy — for long swims and the boat day.
- One matching bikini set in a warm neutral (sand, terracotta, olive) — for the cala, the rooftop, the easy hours.
- One statement piece in colour or print — for the photographs you'll actually keep.
The cover — two, with different jobs
A crochet or open-knit dress that reads as tailoring when you're walking from the water to lunch. And a longer, looser cotton or linen piece for the evening, when the temperature drops just enough that you'll want sleeves.
Eyewear — one good pair, not three okay ones
Balearic light is unforgiving. A polarised lens with proper UV coverage is the only thing standing between your eyes and a headache that ruins the second half of the day. Take the pair you trust; leave the rest at home.
Footwear — keep it to two pairs
Leather sandals you can wear in salt water without losing sleep, plus one closed shoe for dinner on a cobbled street. Anything else is dead weight.
Things people forget
- A small dry-bag for wet suits between rinse and pack-down. Saves a hotel towel and your sanity.
- Reef-safe sunscreen — Mallorca is increasingly strict about this around marine reserves like Cabrera.
- A second swimsuit cover-up if you intend to eat lunch anywhere with a dress code. Many beach clubs in Deià and Sóller will refuse seating in a wet suit.
- A book. The Wi-Fi at the better hotels is, on purpose, unreliable.
The route, if you have a week
Palma for two nights for the architecture and the harbour. Deià or Sóller for two for the calas and the light. Pollensa or Cala Sant Vicenç for the last three for the swimming. Skip Magaluf entirely.
